About the Author

Stanley Ager entered service as a hallboy at the age of fourteen and eventually became head butler at St. Michael’s Mount, where he remained for nearly thirty of his fifty-three years in service. The Butler’s Guide was written after he and his wife, Barbara, retired nearby to Marazion, Cornwall. They are buried on St. Michael’s Mount. Fiona St. Aubyn is also the author of A Portrait of Georgian London and wrote ClothesCarewith James Wagenvoord. She graduated from the University of Winchester with a degree in creative writing and lives in Hampshire with her family. Fiona St. Aubyn is a granddaughter of the late third Lord St. Levan and his wife the Dowager Lady St. Levan, and her brother now lives at St. Michael’s Mount. She knew Stanley Ager all her life.

The author or this book retired in 1975 after 53 years in service as a butler/footman etc. so he was starting his career just about the age in which the Downton Abbey series ended. They were facing many changes to the aristocratic way of life even then, so one can only imagine how the next 50 years changed things. In reading other reviews, it is obvious that the pull of the TV series is what got people interested in reading a book of this time and I am no exception. This book is written simply and is easy to understand although the author mentions specific products that were used in the running of the household that are no longer available, and in fact, I had never heard of. He speaks of polishing the silver and pewter (which I've actually done) but now we have stainless steel which doesn't need polishing. The book is divided into running the home, keeping the wardrobe nice, dining and other graces, which royal occasions and dealing with servants which is something we in the U.S. seldom have to deal with, being a good guest, and a few other items I would place in the "niceities" category. It is fun, as one is reading, to envision the actual topic, as it happens during the Downton Abbey show. Example, how the footman serves the diners and why they serve from the left side of the diner, or why the diner should replace the serving utensils properly on the platter for the next diner to use....all things which are used to great effect in the series. Because of the time period and location (England) about which this book was written, many of the suggestions/instructions will not be useful in today's modern life. However, it is very interesting just to learn about a time past, and about just how much work went into running an estate.

This book, half upstairs-downstairs memoir and half how-to manual for maintaining a household (including the small individual establishment) had gone out of print and was fetching very high prices on the used market. Thanks to the enormous popularity of 'Downton Abbey,' Clarkson Potter has reissued it with a new foreword by the historical advisor to that series. I had often consulted the book in the '80s from my university library, and in my current city have been frustrated not to find it, so I'm very glad to have the new edition. Most of the cleaning and preservation tips, while traditional, would pass muster with modern conservation authorities (something not true of many "household tips" cleaning and polishing methods) and Ager's thoughts on clothes maintenance, table setting and service, and packing clothes for travel are worth the price of admission. The fact that his coauthor was the daughter of the house in which he served for nearly thirty years is a testament to his knowledge and to the esteem in which he was held by the family.

What kind of person becomes a Butler? What do Butlers actually do between serving up the post-dinner Port accompanied by the obligatory sense of dry humor? What's behind that door leading to the kitchen and the inner workings of the house we rarely get to see? These were some of the questions I had that made me order the book in the first place. Stanley Ager and Fiona St. Aubyn did an amazing job answering every question I had. Reading the book took me on a journey behind the scenes that gave me a better understanding of how it's really done.After reading the book, however, nothing has been the same at home: The furniture is polished, the floors get waxed regularly, glasses get polished, and all items of clothing are arranged smartly. OCD? I'd argue otherwise. Stanley's view of organization and means of running a household got me inspired to give it a go, and once I did it made it almost impossible to look back. It's only been four months since I purchased the book, these chores have become routine, and I feel no signs of wanting to let up. I don't enjoy calling it a night with dirty dishes lingering in the sink anymore and my wife is over the moon.

Overall, a delightful read. Well-written and easy to understand. I most enjoyed the sprinkling of personal anecdotes and would have preferred more of them (that's why I gave it only 4 stars). However, there are detailed instructions (many with illustrations) of how to do some of the many chores this butler was required to do throughout his years of service. I found the instructions informative, educational, and of value, even in today's world. I recommend this for anyone interested in reading about "life in an English Manor" as well as anyone interested in learning how things were done (just prior to, and after WWII). It's a great reference guide for writers as well as historians, and it's an entertaining read for those with a casual or passing interest in the subject.

This was a gift for my husband who is fascinated with Butler's and mansions, etc. He has been reading the book little by little and gets pulled in each time he opens it. He thought this a great Father's Day gift. He now is looking forward to planning a visit to working mansions in the US.

Such fun to read about the very rich and titled lived. A few tips for cleaning, but an overall excellent read for someone who loves British history.

Found this to be an entertaining read as he put much reference of his lifecas a butler. Not at all a stuffy book of rules. Would highly reccomend to any reader with a historical predisposition in their soul.

Very enjoyable read. Interesting to hear about Ager's life as a Butler and the goings on of the house. Short book but one I will probably read through again.
