This is the sixth of the Thrush Green series. It's now 1980 and even a remote, Olde World village inhabited mostly by middle-aged and elderly people is feeling the rumblings of social revolution. Frank and Phil Hurst are off to America on an extended business trip. Ordinarily, they'd leave their beautiful home in the care of neighbors, but Frank's grown son has appealed to them to rent to young friends of his.The Hursts are doubtful, but Mr. and Mrs. Jack Thomas come highly recommended. They're desperate for a place to live for a month. He's a charmer and she has a baby on the way. How can the Hursts refuse? The neighbors soon learn that the Thomas menage includes two young friends. The youngsters have a rock band and the late night practice sessions are a problem in a community where most folks are in bed by 10:00 PM. And noise isn't the only disturbance. The neighbors are fearful about damage to the Hurst's precious furniture and to the house itself. And why do the young people seem so dazed and disoriented? Drugs in Thrush Green? Good grief! The Hurst's house survives, but the local rectory isn't so lucky. Genial Charles Henstock and his wife Dimity are long-time, much-loved residents of Thrush Green and their friends are horrified when their home burns while they are on vacation. The Henstocks are heart-broken, but architect Edward Young is delighted to see the last of the Victorian horror. Rumors swirl as to possible uses for the land. Will the church build a new rectory or sell the land to the village? And, if so, what will the village build there? Everyone agrees that the old rectory was an eyesore and horribly uncomfortable to live in, but what will replace it? And will Thrush Green lose Charles and Dimity as neighbors?Old Dotty Harmer isn't in much better shape than the rectory, but she resists suggestions that she's no longer able to care for herself and all her animals. Her niece could sell her own house and move in with her, but is that best for either of them?Winnie Bailey is worried about her old friends the Henstocks and about Dotty Harmer's future. For many years the wife of the village doctor, she's used to looking after her neighbors, but now she's widowed and has her own domestic problems. Having young Jenny move in with her as companion/house keeper has been a fine thing for both of them, but now someone else wants Jenny's services. Widowed farmer Percy Hodge misses his exemplary wife and wants a replacement. He's decided that Jenny would suit him very well and he's not prepared to take no for an answer. Winnie loves her young friend and doesn't want to keep her from making a happy marriage, but would Jenny be accepting Percy because she loves him or because she feels sorry for him?Meanwhile, change is brewing at the village school house. School mistress Dorothy Watson has never completely recovered from her broken hip. With the help of her unselfish colleague Agnes Fogerty, she's managing, but she's wondering if retirement would be wise. One thing is certain. She wants her friend Agnes to retire with her. The two old friends start looking for a house in the sea-side town of Barton, where the climate is gentler than at Thrush Green. But lots of other people have the same idea and finding an appropriate house proves harder than they thought it would be. So will the two popular school teachers be leaving Thrush Green or not?I was amused at the discussion of drugs and the revelation that the Thomas's friends are only using pot and cocaine, not "the hard stuff." It's a reminder of the time when even experts viewed cocaine as a relatively harmless "party drug" and definitely NOT addictive. We got fooled on that one, didn't we?I'm reading this series in order now and enjoying the books even more than when I read them out of order. They can be read as "escape literature" and there's nothing wrong with that. We ALL need to escape sometimes. But MIss Read was a shrewd observer of human nature. Her books are a lively look at people and relationships. It's not a pretend world, but a completely realistic one. Caring about others will never go out of style and neither will these books.
Another blissful visit to Thrush Green! It looks like there will be some characters rotating out and new ones in but isn't that the way real life goes? I did find the MANY typos incredibly annoying. There were misspelled words in almost every chapter. Shoddy typing and editing! I purchased the actual books about Fairacre and there weren't typos in those books so I'm thinking it's the kindle version that has all the typos. Didn't like that at all.
This was another stop in the village of Thrush Green for me. Miss Read has a way to take me away from my real life and plop me down into the friendly, caring Thrush Green. People gossip, they are kind to each other, they are prickly to each other, people take care of each other. they go about their so everyday lives and it's all special when I go there.I thoroughly recommend Miss Read books if you want to go away to an almost mythical place of wonderful everyday life in an English village.
This is a very enjoyable series. If you like a mellow but entertaining read, give these a try!
I want to live in this lovely little English village! Idyllic daily life of the inhabitants of Thrush Green and nearby Lulling, in the English Cotswolds, is chronicled by Miss Read in this series of novels about English country life in the mid 20th Century. Be sure to have a cup of tea beside you as you curl up to read this cozy novel.
