Perhaps because it tries to cover too much in one book, rather than coming out with a basic and an advanced book separately, it messes up the basics. It tries to cover three different keyboard layouts for three different gadgets and advanced topics like differential equations and statistics and probability and regression analysis. But it failed me just on the basic idea of trying to type in a simple equation and see it graphed. And I can't do anything else until I do that. The book says to use the control key followed by what looks like a vertical bar or column to get into graph mode so you can type in the function and see it graphed. There is no key which looks like that on my keyboard. Perhaps it meant the I key or the 1 key? But neither of those works. I also tried control enter and anything else that looked remotely plausible.Perhaps this key exists on a different or previous model? This book was written in 2011. It is now 2017 and I have the Nspire CX CAS which I just bought at the same time as this book, which the Amazon search seems to indicate is the last edition. With a device like this which has changed at least three different times over the last six years, it is irresponsible not to have kept it up-to-date and to still be selling a six year old book.Part of the irresponsibility is in the "for dummies" publisher, for not commissioning a more up-to-date book, either by these authors or someone else if they have moved on to other activities. If you're going to publish technical books, you have to keep them up-to-date. I have a Masters degree in math, so it's not like I can't figure out technical things when they are made reasonably clear. The book, and its eagerness to get to quickly to advanced topics , violates the principle of clarity for the simple graphing functions that I need. I spent over three hours thumbing through the book looking for some other explanation or reference to that vertical bar key .It is mentioned as how to get into calculator mode and how to get into graph mode. So it is pretty basic. I even tried tapping around on the main menu which has pretty little pictures of the calculator and of the graph . And one time only, I was able to get an entry line on the graph , typing a simple equation like a quadratic function, and see it drawn. But I was not able to link that to the calculator page as this book says I should be able to do. Nor was I able to add another function there. This makes the gadget a useless more than hundred dollar slab of plastic and silicon. Unless I can find a better book .Very bad book, not proofread and checked on the most basic commands that you need before you can go any further . I shudder to think how many errors will also exist when it gets to advanced math functions.

The example figures are hard to read. At times information doesn't progress sequentually. Book leaves out some basic command explanations for us dummies who bought it for basic reference. If you have a good strong magnifing glass, then you can begin skimming through pages piecing together a basic command list. The appendix vaguely deals with programming the TI INSPIRE CAS. However, the small font in the examples make it difficult.I went to UTUBE channel and cleared up the issues. This dummy may be filing the book in the circular file...

I bought the book after being frustrated in my classroom in front of my students, and a quick online search brought me to a solution from this book that instantly solved the problem. Before my next class even began, I ordered a copy and began studying. The beauty of the TI-Nspire is that it works very sensibly...if you know what you're doing. The problem is that many of the most basic wonderful functions of the Nspire won't work at all without a little basic knowledge of how format what you ask the calculator to do...and much of this is not intuitive...especially for the beginner. The book is broken down into specific parts on how to work with various applications (Calculator, Graphs, Geometry, Lists & Spreadsheets, Data & Statistics, Notes, and Computer Software) while also including a section on how to set up the Nspire and work with documents. I also found the small appendix on how to program to be interesting, if not of great practical classroom use (for now). To get best use of the book, it's been beneficial for me to reread -- much more quickly this time -- from the beginning. As good as the book is, the material takes a while stick. I began as a beginner, but I would now call myself an intermediate user, and I am getting closer to being able to take advantage of the Nspire in some pretty advanced ways. I'm sincerely looking forward to using the Nspire more in the coming school year because of this book.

Biggest and best help for a 70+ year old trying to learn 2015 new technology, but they use tgese in all the math classes at the HS. And I like to tutor the students, so I had to learn it. Clear and concise directions but could use additional listings in Index. I still have some things I can't figure out.

Helps a great deal. I owned the same calculator just without the cas system. I now purchased the calculator with the cas system and this book was a big help to learn that part of the system. Highly suggest this book and its a great price!

Some good information in here on working with the TI-Nspire. I only have two problems with it: (1) The print, especially when giving screen shots or key shots, is extremely small. (2) At first it's easy to follow the steps as every step is given, but as you work through the book you start getting "see chapter x" instructions on some steps. I'd really like to see each step fully given without having to look things up.

I found this book frustrating. What better way to learn than have the book open in front of me, my handheld in my hand, and duplicate all the key strokes that the author has gone through in each example. Only after several hours of frustration, I am unable to decipher the author's explanation, or duplicate their results. I have an N-spire, an N-spire CX and an N-spire CX CAS, and their explanations and menu items don't correspond to any of my handhelds. As I've already spent the money and have the book, I will keep on trying to fight my way through it, but knowing what I do now, I could never recommend this book to anyone else.I don't hate it (hate is a pretty strong emotion) so it gets the second star, But I definitely feel that I've wasted both my time and my money, and I can't decide which one I find more upsetting.
